<image:caption>Hello! I’m Dr. Allyson Salisbury, an environmental scientist and urban ecologist who studies how trees and other plants grow in the built environment. My research helps us understand how to help trees grow better in less than ideal conditions so we can create greener places for people to live, work, and play. Through teaching courses for adult learners and continuing education, I also work to get environmental and ecological knowledge into the hands of people who manage and care for urban plants. And as a consulting scientist, I draw on my own research experience to provide clients with high quality data organization and management, data analysis, and scientific writing services.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tobias Keene, D.D.S. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. When not striving to keep his patients happy and healthy, he’s enjoys hiking with his family in Rock Creek Park.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Urban Brownfields and Heavy Metal Soils</image:title>
<image:caption>Urban brownfields are abandoned properties considered derelict from lack of use and can contain polluted soil. However, in spite of pollution and other disturbance, brownfields can support unique and diverse plant communities, though we have much to learn about how brownfield conditions and heavy metal contamination can impact the novel ecosystems that develop on them. Focused on Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, my brownfield research has examined: How have soil heavy metal concentrations have changed over time under the site’s early successional forest? How do photosynthesis rates vary along a gradient of heavy metal concentrations? How does the site’s tree canopy vary with heavy metal concentration and change over time? How do soil conditions affect plant community composition?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Structural Soils</image:title>
<image:caption>Structural soils were created to increase the available soil volume under pavement for tree roots. Since trees are long lived organism, long term studies are needed to understand the long term impacts of structural soil systems on tree growth. Since 2013, I have assisted in the collection and analysis of data at a long term study on structural soil and sidewalk trees that started in 1997 in Brooklyn, New York. In this study we compare two oak species growing either in a structural soil sidewalk installation or in open lawn areas across the street. We’ll continue to collect data at least until 2027.</image:caption>
